Our Guide to Diving Holidays in Vanua Levu
Vanua Levu feels a long way from the more developed main Fijian island of Viti Levu. It is much more rustic and remote but with some stunning hotels and even more stunning diving.
The best diving is to be found in the south of the island around Savusavu and this is also where you find the best hotels. The biggest draw is the Namena Marine Reserve which lies about 40 minutes by speedboat offshore. This is one of few protected marine areas in Fiji (something we hope will change!) and the diving is world-class. There are several excellent sites here ranging from pinnacles covered in pristine soft corals in explosive colours, to reef walls teeming with big fish.
Closer to shore there are a large number of local sites with healthy coral and excellent marine life. These sites used to be pristine but have been damaged of late. They remain very good by anyone's standard.
To the north of the island lies the Great Sea Reef, a 200km long reef system so remote that they are still discovering many sites. There is only one private island resort in this area which is the real charm of the place. The diving doesn't reach the dizzying heights of Namena but the overall experience is something special.
Add to the world-class diving a couple of top quality hotels whether for individuals, couples or families and you have the makings of a wonderful holiday.
