Convento de Sao Francisco

In the small town of Vila Franca do Campo on São Miguel lies one of the most interesting boutique hotels in the Azores, the Convento de São Francisco which is a converted 17th century monastery perched above the Atlantic.

The location of the Convento de São Francisco is lovely, looking out over the sea and the islet of Vila Franca and in easy reach of an excellent local dive centre, whale watching and other local attractions. And the building itself is unique with its cloisters, chapter house, gardens and magnificent terraces.

Inside the Convento de São Francisco it is all about large open spaces, natural stone and peace and quiet. There are only 10 rooms and each one is unique with different furniture and fittings. Each has a working fireplace and while not overly luxurious, all are very interesting. The communal areas are all tastefully furnished too. A lot of care and attention has gone into this place.

When it comes to facilities, there is a swimming pool, a squash court, gardens and not much else. The charm of this place is just to be here.

Breakfast is served on an ancient table with the other guests and no lunch or dinner are served. Instead you can venture out to the local restaurants or have food delivered to you.
