Perhaps best described as a five-star nature camp, Amanwana is part of the exclusive Aman group of hotels and is set on the nature reserve of Moyo Island, just to the east of Bali, in Indonesia.

On a protected cove in the west lies Amanwana, a secluded hideaway with 20 guest rooms, or rather 'tents'. These aren't just any tents, however. Designed by a Belgian architect to get around a local law dictating that no hotel structure could be permanent, they are a modern and utterly luxurious interpretation of the word. Each tent features a solid-wall foundation with a waterproof exterior roof and an interior one of canvas. A coral stone veranda surrounds each tent and the interiors contain Indonesian artwork, hardwood flooring, king-size beds and large bathrooms.

There are plenty of dining options at Amanwana. Lunch is informal, served either by the pool or at the open thatched dining pavilion. In the evening, dine at the main pavilion or in complete privacy by your tent, with a bonfire.

Amanwana operates its own very good dive centre, suited to beginners and experienced divers alike, with many of the best dive sites being no more than a 10-minute boat ride away from the resort. The resort has a flotilla of boats available to transport to you to the reefs and dive spots. For experienced divers, Amanwana also offers night dives. Probably the best thing about diving here? You get to call the luxury of Amanwana home. For the trip of a lifetime, add in a few days exploring the waters of Komodo on board the Aman boat, Amanikan.

Guests can also try sports fishing, or for a more relaxed setting take a sunset or picnic cruise to deserted islands. Nature enthusiasts will rejoice at the sheer number of walking trails around the Island, some of which lead to jungle waterfalls.

Amanwana's luxury 'tents' were cunningly designed by a Belgian architect to get around a local law stating that no hotel structure could be permanent.
