Our Asia Diving Blog

Whenever we visit a destination, or hear something interesting about it, we like to write a blog. On this page you can find all of our blogs about diving in Asia. Hopefully these can inspire your own diving adventure there.

The 8 Best Dive Sites in the World

Bucket lists are for landlubbers. If you're a diver, and the ocean is your oyster, then you NEED to dive these spots, arguably the greatest dive sites on our blue planet.

Liveaboard Diving in Style aboard the Damai I

I have a confession to make: I've never been a big fan of liveaboards. Mostly because my only experience of them has been on very basic versions - think shared shower over a toilet-type situations. So I decided it was about time I experienced liveaboard diving as it should be done and headed out to Cenderawasih in West Papua to join the Damai I. And I can confirm that I am now officially a convert. Here's why…

Deep Cuts: the Best Under the Radar Dive Destinations

Whether you're a 'been there, done that, where's next?' kind of traveller, or simply like the idea of exploring beyond the norm, we're here to bring you all the best diving 'Deep Cuts' - destinations that fly under the radar and yet offer some of the best scenery, diving and holiday experiences around. Having canvassed the globe, here are five of our favourites…

The Best Diving Holiday Destinations for Summer

Summer. Even thinking the word brings on visions of Pimm's in the garden, the distinctive waft of barbecue and most of us Brits sporting some fairly interesting tan lines (read: burn lines). And thankfully Summer is finally on its way. But while the Great British Summer can be marvellous, it's fair to say it can also be - how to put this - fickle, at the best of times. Which is why it's good to have a Plan B, namely a summer holiday, in the pipeline. And it just so happens that some of the best dive destinations around the world are perfect during the summer months, but availability is going like hotcakes so the time is nigh to get booking, people! Here are our top six dive destinations this summer…

The Pearl of the Andaman

Coming up to my 20 year "anni-diver-sary", having logged over 2,000 dives from destinations such as Thailand, Oman, Indonesia, Malta, and the Philippines (to name but a few), my affinity for the Big Blue is as strong now as it has ever been. In all my years of exploring the underwater world, the one question I have been asked more than any is "What is your best dive?", to which I have become accustomed to answering "the next one". But I do have one particular story, though hard to fathom (pun intended), I think might be deserving of "best" accolade.

Amy's Life of Dive

My diving journey started on my gap year around Thailand, Australia and Fiji where I completed my PADI Open Water and Advanced on Koh Tao. I remember my first experience well, from the brief panic that I was breathing underwater to the realisation that there was a whole new world to discover. On my travels, I completed a few fun dives in Australia diving the Whitsundays and the Barrier Reef. I still kick myself to this day that I didn't dive in Fiji… one day!

Dauin Diving: Atmosphere Resort and Spa

Following my trip in the Philippines, a couple of resorts really stuck out to me as being the essence of what 'Dive in Style' is all about. In my previous blog, I mentioned a resort called Atmosphere Resort and Spa on Negros island but I wanted to expand on what I wrote there to explain exactly why this has become one of my favourite resorts in the Philippines.

Our New Philippines Diving Destinations

In May, I went on a trip out to the Philippines to explore some new diving destinations to add to our current Philippines dive offering. I was absolutely blown away by some of the dive spots and hotels that I found and here is an overview of each.

Luxury Komodo Liveaboard Diving

In June, I took a group of journalists on the diving adventure of a lifetime; a trip to experience Komodo liveaboard diving at its very best. I left the UK unbelievably excited and returned even more so and now I just want to go back!

UV Diving

Night diving is a must for any diver wishing to experience all the thrills that you can gain underwater. There is, however, a way to take it to even more extremes that will have you amazed at the sheer beauty the underwater world can bring.

A Few Summer Diving Hotspots

Summer diving, this time in Komodo in Indonesia. Stunning. With weather in the UK in summer unpredictable at best and England out of the World Cup, it's about time to escape on a last minute summer diving adventure. Here are a few ideas to inspire!

Top spots for marine life in the Philippines

The high season has just begun in the Philippines and runs until June each year with clear blue skies and the opportunity to experiences the Philippines and its marine life. With 7,000 islands the diving opportunities are incredible and here are our top picks for the chance to encounter some incredible marine life:

Ultimate Liveaboard Diving in Raja Ampat

Finally I have found my way to the very peak of Dive in Style experiences. Having visited so many places and so many boats over the past 10 years, diving in Raja Ampat and on board Si Datu Bua, finally I made it to the absolute top, the very Everest of what I had dreamed about when I set out to try and marry the very best diving with as much comfort as possible. Some of you may know of Silolona, reports on which appear in both issues of Dive in Style, and Si Datu Bua is her younger sister. The owner who whilst American, lives and breathes Indonesia, carved these boats out of the jungles of the Far East and married traditional boat building skills with the latest technology to create this tiny but remarkable fleet.

Long Haul Winter Sun

The temperatures in the UK are still above 10˚C, but the question on all of our minds is for how long? Soon the era of darkness and cold will take over and before we know it we will all suffer from a major lack of vitamin D and a constant sniffle. So it is time for you to plan at keeping those vitamins at the right level. And why not combine this with a little bit, or a lot, of 'winter diving'? At Original Diving, we have selected the best destinations for long haul winter sun:

Unbelievable Diving in Raja Ampat

I will confess to being a bit over enthusiastic when it comes to expounding the wonders of diving in Raja Ampat (The Four Kings) but frankly I don't really care. I am writing this blog supposedly about the best coral, and while Raja Ampat is right up there at the very pinnacle, you cannot really have best coral without corresponding marine life, so from that point of view it is something of a bargain, sort of buy one get one free.

Scuba Diving in Bali & Lombok

We are great fans of Indonesia and have covered some of the best diving spots in the archipelago over the last few years including north and south Sulawesi, Raja Ampat, Banda Sea, Kalimantan, Komodo and more. However, we had not experienced much of scuba diving in Bali and Lombok first-hand which is why I went out there in July to find out what it is all about. The dive sites in Bali are hugely varied and this is what I loved most about diving around this island.

Dive in Style at Amanwana, Moyo Island

Having read a lot about it both in our book Dive in Style and on the internet, I was extremely excited to be heading out there in early July to review Amanwana on Moyo Island. My expectations were high with it featuring as one of only 26 properties in the book, but from the moment I arrived until the moment I left I was not disappointed.

Top 5 Dive and Travel Combination Holidays

We know you diving fanatics love the ocean, but ever thought of extending your trip to discover more? Look no further, here are our top five dive and travel combination holidays so that you can gain even more from the destination you visit both in, and out of the water! This list is by no means exhaustive - as part of award-winning Original Travel, we can help with all your non-diving needs too.

Top 10 Diving Beaches

Tim Simond, author of Dive in Style, presents his top 10 beaches worldwide. Not only are they stunning but all sit next to world-class diving so you can spend your mornings in the depths and your afternoons on the sand.

Imaginary Celebrity Diving Holidays

The world is full of possibilities when it comes to diving holidays and we are experts in creating the right trip for you. With this in mind, we thought it might be fun to dream up a few imaginary snapshot itineraries for famous people in the present. For example, where on earth would you send the Beckhams on holiday for a dose of winter sun and to learn to dive? Diving is a popular sport amongst celebrities, Tiger Woods once explained his love for diving with 'The fish don't know who I am'.

Our Top 5 Winter Dive Destinations

Now that winter has begun and the weather in the UK is grim to say the least, we thought it the appropriate moment to turn your attention to those parts of the globe that are enjoying warmer climes and of course some lovely diving. While you may be drenched from your commute to work in the UK, in these winter dive destinations you will only be soaked from an incredible dive and this certainly won't last long with the sun on your back! So here are our top five winter dive destinations where you can get your fix of winter sun:

Types of Diving: Wall Diving

If you suffer from vertigo then it is probably best to stick to sloping reefs as opposed to drop-offs and walls, with some going down to 600m! But if heights are not an issue for you, wall diving can prove to be some of the most interesting and exciting diving you can do.

Top Destinations for 2013

Now that we have begun the year, we thought it appropriate to outline which destinations we are most interested in for 2013 and looking to expand/add to our portfolio.

Diving the Banda Sea - Part 1

Dive in Style author Tim Simond is diving his way round the most remote parts of Indonesia. This is the first in a series of blogs on his trip written on board the Seven Seas boat in the Banda Sea.

Animal Encounters: Diving with Hammerhead Sharks

There is no mistaking how the hammerhead shark got its name: the head is flattened and extends outwards into the shape of a hammer, known as a cephalofoil. They appear so otherworldly since the head seems completely out of place on a fish with such a streamlined body.

Animal Encounters: Dive with Manta Rays

To dive with manta rays is near the top of most divers' bucket list and for very good reason: soaring through the water like birds of the sea they are a stunning sight. Manta, meaning blanket in Spanish, appropriately describes the manta ray which can have a wingspan of up to 7.5m and weigh up to 2,900 lbs.

80 Senses #65 - Komodo Luxury Liveaboard Diving

The remote island of Komodo in Indonesia is that rarity, a National Park and a National Marine Park. Famous for the unspoilt nature of the reefs and marine life below the surface of the crystal clear waters, the island of Komodo itself is home to the eponymous dragon and dramatic landscapes.

New Dive Destinations Uncovered

At Dive in Style, we spend our lives researching exciting and new dive destinations so you don't have to. We will soon be launching a new website with lots of new dive trips but here's a taster of what's to come. These trips are perfect whether you want to dive, snorkel, or just relax.

Marine Animals - Strangers of the Deep

Most of us are familiar with the television programmes exploring the deep blue sea and unearthing strange, often sometimes alien like marine animals such as anglerfish or the deep sea squid. What most of us don't know however is that you don't have to be part of a BBC research team to get up close and personal with these weird and wonderful creatures. All you need to do is dive (or even snorkel!) Here we take a look at some of the strangest marine animals out there and where you can go to find them.

Nudibranchs - Facts About The World's Prettiest Slugs

Nudibranchs, sometimes more commonly known as "sea slugs" are some of the hardest creatures to spot on a dive. Although related to snails, these colourful little creatures have ditched the homes they carry on their backs as they have evolved. Similar to land snails, nudibranchs also leave a slime trail, full of chemicals, which can warn other slugs of danger, or be used to find a mate.

Diving in Style Responsibly - How and Where?

What exactly is eco diving or snorkelling? To qualify as an 'eco dive resort' the guiding issue is that the hotel should have a minimal impact on the environment. And so it is the same with divers and snorkellers who can tend to treat the sea and the coral reefs as an endlessly renewable resource seeing as how there appears to be just so much of it.

I've just sat down with the pack you sent. Just wanted to say that it is a great first impression of Original Travel
