Our Indian Ocean Diving Blog

We have visited the Indian Ocean many times over the years and each time we do, we like to write blogs about our experiences. On this page you can read all of our posts related to Indian Ocean Diving. We hope you enjoy them.

Top Family Diving Holiday Destinations with Young Kids

If, like me, you are in the phase of life where everything seems to revolve around nappies, nursery and obsessions with football (I have a 1-year old, a 3-year old and a 5-year old) then you will know that finding a suitable destination for a diving trip as a family can be tricky. If, also like me, you are a passionate diver and traveller who loves nothing more than being on a boat or under the waves, this challenge can be a frustrating one. Gone are the days of being able to hop on a plane to a remote part of the world to dive four times a day, every day. Long gone.

Charlie's Life of Dive

I used to celebrate Christmas a lot when I was younger. Decoration time was always exciting; a wreath on the door, pine twirling around the bannisters, ornaments and candles out in full. I always remember that my brother and I would decorate the tree only for it to be sneakily corrected and perfected by my dad later that evening. All that changed as we got older. Now I don't want to sound like a scrooge, I'm really not one, but I did find the onslaught of commercial Christmas a bit exhausting. Maybe it was the lack of vitamin D talking, but all those jingles took their toll. On the bright side, this was the advent of the Christmas holiday for my family and me and, thank goodness, we have rarely looked back…

Learning to Dive: Part 1

Before we begin, I have a confession to make: I am not a water baby. Like most complexes I can trace this back to two very specific moments growing up. Firstly, on a trip to the Norfolk coast when my dad nearly cap sized our pedal boat into a murky ocean of doom (my 5-year-old self wasn't to know that we were actually pedalling a giant swan around a 3ft deep paddling pool). And, about 5 years later, when I had to complete my primary school swimming test. A fellow classmate, who would have certainly been described in an Enid Blyton story as 'a sturdy kind of girl', jumped from the side of the pool straight on to my head. I failed my test and was subsequently made to wear a bright yellow swimming cap for the rest of the year. Water sports just weren't going to be my calling…

Amy's Life of Dive

My diving journey started on my gap year around Thailand, Australia and Fiji where I completed my PADI Open Water and Advanced on Koh Tao. I remember my first experience well, from the brief panic that I was breathing underwater to the realisation that there was a whole new world to discover. On my travels, I completed a few fun dives in Australia diving the Whitsundays and the Barrier Reef. I still kick myself to this day that I didn't dive in Fiji… one day!

Luxury Island-Hopping in the Maldives

In December I was lucky enough to head out to the Maldives to review some of the hotels we already feature and to explore some new ones. The Maldives is one of my favourite spots on earth: incredible luxury resorts, stunning scenery and of course, world-class diving. It is everything that 'Dive in Style' is about and more. Here is an overview of the places I visited.

Long Haul Winter Sun

The temperatures in the UK are still above 10˚C, but the question on all of our minds is for how long? Soon the era of darkness and cold will take over and before we know it we will all suffer from a major lack of vitamin D and a constant sniffle. So it is time for you to plan at keeping those vitamins at the right level. And why not combine this with a little bit, or a lot, of 'winter diving'? At Original Diving, we have selected the best destinations for long haul winter sun:

Honeymoon Maldives Diving

Honeymoon Maldives diving holidays are some of our favourites. Tim Simond, author of Dive in Style, shares his tips for the best honeymoon Maldives diving holidays. I cannot think of another destination that is so entwined with honeymoon. The Maldives just seems to be at the top of everyone's hit list and it seems getting married is the best excuse to visit. Let's face it, there is something amazing about these islands which I first visited in 1979 (showing my age!) when there were just a couple of 'resorts', but the pull was the same: the endless deserted palm-fringed white sand islets straight out of a dream and clear, multi-hued waters teaming with life. Even back then, it was simply the most romantic honeymoon diving destination you could hope for. In fact, while less unspoiled today, it is arguably more romantic with all the luxury resorts on offer. Add in world-class diving and snorkelling and you see why I am a fan of honeymoon Maldives diving. OK, so we know it is romantic beyond belief, privacy abounds, the potential for spoiling only limited by your cheque book, but which resorts would be top of my list when it comes to honeymoon Maldives diving…

Top 10 Diving Beaches

Tim Simond, author of Dive in Style, presents his top 10 beaches worldwide. Not only are they stunning but all sit next to world-class diving so you can spend your mornings in the depths and your afternoons on the sand.

Imaginary Celebrity Diving Holidays

The world is full of possibilities when it comes to diving holidays and we are experts in creating the right trip for you. With this in mind, we thought it might be fun to dream up a few imaginary snapshot itineraries for famous people in the present. For example, where on earth would you send the Beckhams on holiday for a dose of winter sun and to learn to dive? Diving is a popular sport amongst celebrities, Tiger Woods once explained his love for diving with 'The fish don't know who I am'.

Our Top 5 Winter Dive Destinations

Now that winter has begun and the weather in the UK is grim to say the least, we thought it the appropriate moment to turn your attention to those parts of the globe that are enjoying warmer climes and of course some lovely diving. While you may be drenched from your commute to work in the UK, in these winter dive destinations you will only be soaked from an incredible dive and this certainly won't last long with the sun on your back! So here are our top five winter dive destinations where you can get your fix of winter sun:

Animal Encounters: Dive with Manta Rays

To dive with manta rays is near the top of most divers' bucket list and for very good reason: soaring through the water like birds of the sea they are a stunning sight. Manta, meaning blanket in Spanish, appropriately describes the manta ray which can have a wingspan of up to 7.5m and weigh up to 2,900 lbs.

Diving in Style Responsibly - How and Where?

What exactly is eco diving or snorkelling? To qualify as an 'eco dive resort' the guiding issue is that the hotel should have a minimal impact on the environment. And so it is the same with divers and snorkellers who can tend to treat the sea and the coral reefs as an endlessly renewable resource seeing as how there appears to be just so much of it.

The Maldives: An Assault of the (Six) Senses

Last Friday I flew out to the Maldives as a guest of hotel operator Six Senses to visit three of their hotels including the soon to be opened Six Senses Laamu in the remote south. My aim was to see what each has to offer both from a diving perspective, and in terms of the general holiday experience. What better time to jot down some thoughts than while sitting here on the plane on my way back home.

Twenty Years Too Late

In a series of regular blogs, Dive in Style author and founder, Tim Simond, will discuss the why and what of Dive in Style, and will share his experiences of the resorts and dive sites we feature at Dive in Style.

I have travelled with Original Diving and Original Travel on several different occasions and the service received has been consistently outstanding whether diving in Asia or taking a Safari in Africa.
