The 8 Best Dive Sites in the World

Bucket lists are for landlubbers. If you're a diver, and the ocean is your oyster, then you NEED to dive these spots, arguably the greatest dive sites on our blue planet.

Whether you're a 'been there, done that, where's next?' kind of traveller, or simply like the idea of exploring beyond the norm, we're here to bring you all the best diving 'Deep Cuts' - destinations that fly under the radar and yet offer some of the best scenery, diving and holiday experiences around. Having canvassed the globe, here are five of our favourites…

The Best Diving Holiday Destinations for Summer

Summer. Even thinking the word brings on visions of Pimm's in the garden, the distinctive waft of barbecue and most of us Brits sporting some fairly interesting tan lines (read: burn lines). And thankfully Summer is finally on its way. But while the Great British Summer can be marvellous, it's fair to say it can also be - how to put this - fickle, at the best of times. Which is why it's good to have a Plan B, namely a summer holiday, in the pipeline. And it just so happens that some of the best dive destinations around the world are perfect during the summer months, but availability is going like hotcakes so the time is nigh to get booking, people! Here are our top six dive destinations this summer…

A Diving Adventure in Socorro: Part II

We reached Socorro Island having done some truly amazing dives, encountering giant mantas, white tip reef sharks and dolphins along the way. The great diving continued and we had much better visibility at 'The Point', a honeycomb lava tube running from high on the mainland far out to sea. Again the currents were strong and we clawed with the very tips of our fingers, like Spiderman, at various points of the dives.

A Diving Adventure in Socorro: Part I

In the heavily depleted ocean that covers a mere 71% of our globe there is always a momentous sigh of relief to be felt when you visit somewhere that lives up to its reputation. I recently visited the Revillagigedo Islands with the intention of experiencing some of the magic these islands have to offer. It was the peak of baitball season, the time of year that some of the best pelagic activity is expected for these islands; notorious for year-round shark and manta action. Expectations were high.

Our Guide to a Luxury Holiday in Mexico

Winter is now in full swing, which can only mean one thing - let's get the gloves out! Alternatively you can grab the opportunity to escape from the grim UK weather and experience some amazing places where the mercury in the thermometer remains much higher. With Mexico being our destination of the month, we thought it would be appropriate to write a bit more about it and explain why we adore this country so much. It is hard to find a country that is able to suit everyone's needs and we truly believe that Mexico ticks all the boxes. Whether you like an action packed break or prefer peaceful days on a lovely beach, Mexico has it all.

Best Diving in Mexico

This was my first visit to Central America and to a country I have always wanted to visit, so my expectations for Mexico were high. I wasn't disappointed, far from it. With 10 days packed with transfers, site inspections, meetings and dives, I knew it would be busy but I also knew I would have an unforgettable time and here I share some of my highlights of the best diving in Mexico.

Scuba Diving Bucket List

This list is by no means exhaustive - as part of award-winning Original Travel, we can help with all your non-diving needs too.

Our Top 5 Winter Dive Destinations

Now that winter has begun and the weather in the UK is grim to say the least, we thought it the appropriate moment to turn your attention to those parts of the globe that are enjoying warmer climes and of course some lovely diving. While you may be drenched from your commute to work in the UK, in these winter dive destinations you will only be soaked from an incredible dive and this certainly won't last long with the sun on your back! So here are our top five winter dive destinations where you can get your fix of winter sun:

Types of Diving: Wall Diving

If you suffer from vertigo then it is probably best to stick to sloping reefs as opposed to drop-offs and walls, with some going down to 600m! But if heights are not an issue for you, wall diving can prove to be some of the most interesting and exciting diving you can do.

Top Destinations for 2013

Now that we have begun the year, we thought it appropriate to outline which destinations we are most interested in for 2013 and looking to expand/add to our portfolio.

Animal Encounters: Diving with Hammerhead Sharks

There is no mistaking how the hammerhead shark got its name: the head is flattened and extends outwards into the shape of a hammer, known as a cephalofoil. They appear so otherworldly since the head seems completely out of place on a fish with such a streamlined body.

Animal Encounters: Dive with Manta Rays

To dive with manta rays is near the top of most divers' bucket list and for very good reason: soaring through the water like birds of the sea they are a stunning sight. Manta, meaning blanket in Spanish, appropriately describes the manta ray which can have a wingspan of up to 7.5m and weigh up to 2,900 lbs.

Diving 'The Pit' in Mexico

Ever since seeing David Attenborough's Planet Earth, I have been obsessed with the idea of diving the underwater cave systems in Mexico - the cenotes. Last summer I got my chance.

A Fish(er) in Water

It is difficult to ignore the fact that my name very conveniently mirrors my fascination and love of the marine world! Coincidence? Or perhaps some deep-rooted, inherited subconscious and therefore inevitable? Either way, water has played a prominent part in my life from bottoms-up in rock pools as a toddler to learning to dive at the age of twelve to a degree in Marine Biology. Over the last few years I have taken as much time as possible outside study to explore both above and below the water. What is so exciting to me and particularly with diving is that you have never seen it all and no dive is the same (and in a lot of cases even vaguely similar).

Extraordinary Snorkelling Trips

Controversial as it may sound from dive experts, we believe that you can often get as much pleasure from snorkelling as you can from diving. In fact, sometimes snorkelling is the best way to view the underwater world. With this in mind we have been researching the globe for original and exciting snorkelling trips.

Scuba Diving Holidays: The Best Dive of my Life

As we descended, the currents were swirling and there was life everywhere...After my first year at university I decided I needed a well earned three-month trip to South America. So aged 20 and full of the confidence of the youth, I packed my bags and what little money I had been able to save by working as a labourer at a petrochemical plant, and set off all on my lonesome for a trip to Ecuador and Colombia. I had no real idea what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go, but that's why it was so exciting…

A (Blue) Hole New World

Blue holes, or offshore flooded caves are aptly named for the dramatic contrast between the dark blue waters of their depths and the lighter blue of the surrounding shallower waters. They are underwater sinkholes that were formed during glaciations when sea levels were much lower than today. As sea levels rose, the caves were flooded, leading to the creation of these ocean abysses.
