Coral Reefs

We were particularly excited for this week's episode of Blue Planet 2, which took us underwater to explore the most diverse marine ecosystems: coral reefs. Despite covering less than one percent of the Earth's surface, these submarine cities support a staggering 25 percent of all marine species. And once again, the chaps at Blue Planet didn't disappoint, showing some of the reefs more eclectic residents, including a terrifying pre-historic bobbit worm reminiscent of Stranger Things (more on that later), a grouper and octopus hunting together and a turtle spa, as well as a host of other fascinating marine life. But as the episode ended we felt rather restless; the TV is not enough to satiate us, we need to see these glorious ecosystems in the flesh. So if you're a bit like us and fancy an Attenborough adventure, read on for our favourite coral reefs.

Cool Combos

Like jeans and a white t-shirt, gin and tonic, toast and marmite (discuss), some things are just better together. Never is this more true than with travelling; some combinations just work, from mixing critters with culture, history with hammerheads or safari with scuba. Because let's face it, the experiences above the waves can be just as enriching as those beneath them. Lucky for you, we have a list as long as a ling of the coolest holiday combinations out there, and here are a few of our favourites…

Our 2017 Top Picks

Here's your starter for ten: what activity has been clinically proven (by the highly renowned Original Diving Science Department) to cure the January Blues? Which means it's time to get the diary out and start planning. And when it comes to choosing the perfect destination, we've got plenty of ideas up our sleeves. Here's just a few of our favourites…

Diving in Mafia Island

In addition to being much nicer to everyone and learning to do a pull-up (sadly not much progress on either account), my main New Year's resolution for 2016 was to learn to scuba dive. I've always loved the sea and I couldn't see myself not falling in love with it; even better, swimming remains one of only two sports I've ever beaten my brother at so I invited him to learn with me and hoped diving would become the third. The only remaining question was where to learn and, handily, I work with a team of expert divers who were able to narrow down my options. The brief I gave them was: a great dive school, somewhere we've never been and somewhere that's off the beaten track so we can brag about it to everyone… they told me Mafia Island was going to smash all three of these out of the park and so we were set!

Magical Mnemba Island Zanzibar

Every now and again you come across a place that is so mind-blowingly beautiful that all you want to do is get back there as quickly as possible. On a recent research trip to East Africa I found one such place (two actually - Vamizi is the other one): the magical Mnemba Island Zanzibar. This place is very special.Mnemba is a private island hideaway just a short boat ride from the island of Zanzibar but it feels a million miles away. With just 10 villas (bandas as they call them) it offers an incredibly intimate experience.
