Coral Reefs

We were particularly excited for this week's episode of Blue Planet 2, which took us underwater to explore the most diverse marine ecosystems: coral reefs. Despite covering less than one percent of the Earth's surface, these submarine cities support a staggering 25 percent of all marine species. And once again, the chaps at Blue Planet didn't disappoint, showing some of the reefs more eclectic residents, including a terrifying pre-historic bobbit worm reminiscent of Stranger Things (more on that later), a grouper and octopus hunting together and a turtle spa, as well as a host of other fascinating marine life. But as the episode ended we felt rather restless; the TV is not enough to satiate us, we need to see these glorious ecosystems in the flesh. So if you're a bit like us and fancy an Attenborough adventure, read on for our favourite coral reefs.

What We Learnt From Chasing Coral

Picture this: A kaleidoscope of colourful corals, from gargantuan brain corals to gently swaying fan corals. Schools of vibrant purple and yellow fairy basslets dance above whilst snakelike moray eels lurk in crevices. Rainbow coloured parrot fish peck away for algae below a giant goliath grouper. A green olive riley turtle might even glide past…

Five of the Best House Reefs

Coral reefs are some of the world's most colourful and diverse ecosystems, and a hidden treasure to feast the eyes upon for any scuba diver and snorkeller. But why should you wait for a boat trip from your hotel when you can access these underwater Edens straight from the shores of your resort? So without further ado, here's our top five hotels with the best house reefs.

Spotlight on: Fiji

The Fijian archipelago comprises approximately 330 islands and 500 islets spread across over 7,000 square miles in the South Pacific Ocean - the phrase 'getting away from it all' has never been more apt. Beneath the waves you'll see an abundance of soft coral, for which Fiji is renowned, as well as everything from sharks and dolphins to ghost pipefish, leaf scorpion fish and all manner of tropical reef fish. Above the waves the diversity doesn't end; the country's iconic clear waters and white sand beaches give way to jungle-covered mountains that rise abruptly from the shore. Add to that a population of the friendliest people on the planet and some lovely boutique hotels and you can see why Fiji remains such an Original Diving favourite. And as if you needed any more persuading, here's a few more reasons why we love Fiji so much...

The Best Diving Holiday Destinations for Summer

Summer. Even thinking the word brings on visions of Pimm's in the garden, the distinctive waft of barbecue and most of us Brits sporting some fairly interesting tan lines (read: burn lines). And thankfully Summer is finally on its way. But while the Great British Summer can be marvellous, it's fair to say it can also be - how to put this - fickle, at the best of times. Which is why it's good to have a Plan B, namely a summer holiday, in the pipeline. And it just so happens that some of the best dive destinations around the world are perfect during the summer months, but availability is going like hotcakes so the time is nigh to get booking, people! Here are our top six dive destinations this summer…

Paradise found in Fiji

My first visit to Fiji was in 2007, and as a backpacker I knew it would be a place I had to come back to. So I vowed that I would return to its beautiful beaches and dreamy waters, and this time I would do Fiji the way it should be done; luxurious hotels and incredible diving. So that is exactly what I have just come back from doing, and it certainly didn't disappoint. Fiji is renowned for its soft corals (it's actually known as the soft coral capital of the world) so the colours were just incredible and quite unlike anything I had seen before. This rare area of pristine coral brings with it an extraordinary selection of marine life, from ghost pipefish and leaf scorpionfish to adorable nudibranchs - they were all there.

Amy's Life of Dive

My diving journey started on my gap year around Thailand, Australia and Fiji where I completed my PADI Open Water and Advanced on Koh Tao. I remember my first experience well, from the brief panic that I was breathing underwater to the realisation that there was a whole new world to discover. On my travels, I completed a few fun dives in Australia diving the Whitsundays and the Barrier Reef. I still kick myself to this day that I didn't dive in Fiji… one day!
