The main attraction at Hotel Caloura is the location. It is on one of the most beautiful parts of the main island of São Miguel in the Azores and set in a stunning cliff-top position.

The Hotel Caloura is the only hotel we found that has its own dive centre so for ease of diving, this is the best place to come, especially as some of the best local diving is to be found just offshore from the Hotel Caloura itself. The centre is open from May to October and is run by a lovely Belgian couple.

The Hotel Caloura is made up of 80 rooms with all being standard rooms apart from one suite. All rooms have the amenities you would expect from a 4-star hotel (there are no 5-stars in the Azores!) with air-conditioning, cable TV, a private balcony and more. The hotel has been designed so that each room has a stunning view out to sea.

The Hotel Caloura has a good range of facilities including a fresh water swimming pool, a sauna and gym, tennis court and business centre. This is one of the only resort-style hotels on the islands.

There is only one restaurant in the hotel which has incredible panoramic views of the coastline. There is also a snack bar and a bar. If you want to head out to eat or drink then you need to drive or take a taxi as there isn't much on offer in the tiny local town.

Why we love it

Some of the best local diving is done from the shore right in front of the Hotel Caloura and you can do as much as you like.
