Our Raja Ampat Diving Blog

Whenever we visit a destination, or hear something interesting about it, we like to write a blog. On this page you can find all of our blogs about diving in Raja Ampat. Hopefully these can inspire your own diving adventure there.

Coral Reefs

We were particularly excited for this week's episode of Blue Planet 2, which took us underwater to explore the most diverse marine ecosystems: coral reefs. Despite covering less than one percent of the Earth's surface, these submarine cities support a staggering 25 percent of all marine species. And once again, the chaps at Blue Planet didn't disappoint, showing some of the reefs more eclectic residents, including a terrifying pre-historic bobbit worm reminiscent of Stranger Things (more on that later), a grouper and octopus hunting together and a turtle spa, as well as a host of other fascinating marine life. But as the episode ended we felt rather restless; the TV is not enough to satiate us, we need to see these glorious ecosystems in the flesh. So if you're a bit like us and fancy an Attenborough adventure, read on for our favourite coral reefs.

Don't Miss The Boat...

We love to plan. In fact, we have a rather large, rather worn map hung with pride in our office. We like to cover it in post-it notes scribbled with recommendations, draw frantic highlighter lines across its vast oceans and riddle its landmarks with pins as we argue over the best places to dive in the world. However, there's one corner of our map that's particularly well-worn, hidden amongst a flurry of colours and excited sticky notes, a unanimous favourite amongst the Original Diving team: Raja Ampat, the Amazon of the underwater world. Why are we telling you all this? Because trips to Raja Ampat for 2018 and 2019 are selling like hotcakes. So if this astonishing corner of the globe is on your Bucket List, it's time to pick up the phone and start planning.

What We Learnt From Chasing Coral

Picture this: A kaleidoscope of colourful corals, from gargantuan brain corals to gently swaying fan corals. Schools of vibrant purple and yellow fairy basslets dance above whilst snakelike moray eels lurk in crevices. Rainbow coloured parrot fish peck away for algae below a giant goliath grouper. A green olive riley turtle might even glide past…

Ultimate Liveaboard Diving in Raja Ampat

Finally I have found my way to the very peak of Dive in Style experiences. Having visited so many places and so many boats over the past 10 years, diving in Raja Ampat and on board Si Datu Bua, finally I made it to the absolute top, the very Everest of what I had dreamed about when I set out to try and marry the very best diving with as much comfort as possible. Some of you may know of Silolona, reports on which appear in both issues of Dive in Style, and Si Datu Bua is her younger sister. The owner who whilst American, lives and breathes Indonesia, carved these boats out of the jungles of the Far East and married traditional boat building skills with the latest technology to create this tiny but remarkable fleet.

Long Haul Winter Sun

The temperatures in the UK are still above 10˚C, but the question on all of our minds is for how long? Soon the era of darkness and cold will take over and before we know it we will all suffer from a major lack of vitamin D and a constant sniffle. So it is time for you to plan at keeping those vitamins at the right level. And why not combine this with a little bit, or a lot, of 'winter diving'? At Original Diving, we have selected the best destinations for long haul winter sun:

Unbelievable Diving in Raja Ampat

I will confess to being a bit over enthusiastic when it comes to expounding the wonders of diving in Raja Ampat (The Four Kings) but frankly I don't really care. I am writing this blog supposedly about the best coral, and while Raja Ampat is right up there at the very pinnacle, you cannot really have best coral without corresponding marine life, so from that point of view it is something of a bargain, sort of buy one get one free.
