Life is in the detail

If you’re heading to Brazil’s Bahia state, make sure you spend a few days in the charming little cobblestone town of Lencois. From there, hike into Chapada Diamantina National Park for billowing waterfalls, deep canyons and natural waterslides – all without seeing another soul.

My travels

Everest-Base-Camp

Travel Things I Want To Do Before I Die

  • Go on a liveaboard to dive in Indonesia's Raja Ampat
  • Hike to Everest Base Camp in Nepal
  • Freedive with whales and orcas in Norway
  • Take a voyage to the remote wilderness of Patagonia and Antarctica
  • Dive between two continents in Iceland
Mexico-Cenote

Best Moments

  • Diving in the cenotes of Mexico: Dos Ojos for its labyrinth of stalagmites and stalactites, Casa Carwash for its Eden-like underwater garden, Angelita for its spooky Tim Burton setting and the best cenote, The Pit, for the turquoise shard of light that pierces through the freshwater lighting up the entire cave.
  • Watching the entire Milky Way at Punto Gallinas in Colombia, South Americas northernmost point.
  • Taking a speedboat to the Jurassic Park style islands of Coiba National Park, Panama, then diving amongst a whirlpool of marine life - I've never seen so many fish in my life!
  • Hearing a low grumbling in the middle of the night, opening my tent and seeing a shock of red in the darkness as Volcán de Fuego (Guatemala's most active volcano) exploded.
Atlas-Mountains

Toughest Travel Moment

  • A serious bout of food poisoning halfway through a hike up the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.
Yoga-Finca

Weirdest Travel Moment

  • Volunteering at a Yoga Finca in Colombia and being convinced to take part in a Vamana Dhauti. Never again!

Gozo’s Top Dive Sites

Malta's been hogging the headlines of all the travel features this year, from romantic regaling of Valletta's butterscotch streets (which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site, don't you know) to poetic prose on the archipelago's eternal sunshine. But we think a rather large,…

Sun's Out

After somewhat questionable weather over Easter (for us Brits, anyway), the skies have finally cleared and a few brave souls have even stepped out in shorts. And with the faintest whiff of warmth in the air we're stuffing clothes into our suitcases faster than a millennial can text. But…

Reasons Australia Should Be On Your Radar

When we say Australia, no doubt images of kangaroos, didgeridoos and, er, Neighbours spring to mind. But Australia has so much more on offer. From emerald tropical rainforests and red outback sands to glistening white coastlines and, of course, some of the world's most iconic diving; if…

The Gift Of Time

Ever wish you could magic up a few extra days of holiday? Well, actually in May you can. And no, we're not suggesting there are now 375 days in the year or that we've secretly located the DeLorean from Back to the Future. With two Bank Holidays, if you take 14 days of holiday in between, you…

The crème de la crème of Maldives diving

An archipelago of coconut fringed islands that scatter the Indian Ocean, the Maldives has long tempted daydreams of Robinson Crusoe escapes, but dip below the glistening waters and the diving is just as inspiring. Although you will find healthy coral gardens in abundance, divers continue to…

The Azores Best Dive Sites

Unique underwater topography characterised by big boulders, caverns and canyons; crystal clear visibility; mantas and mobulas; sharks and ship wrecks; macro life and much, much larger whales… and all in Europe. Yes, you heard right. Located a mere four hour flight from London, we think the…

Top Dive Sites in Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat has many names; Four Kings; the crown jewel of the Coral Triangle; the underwater Serengeti; the end of the rainbow (okay, that one was us), but no name can quite do justice to the diving in Indonesia's Raja Ampat. Home to the highest marine biodiversity on earth, descending into…

Valentine's day holiday

A Valentine’s Day To Remember

Red roses, chocolate hearts and cards adorned with cupid: love it or loathe it, Valentine's Day is approaching and nothing says romance better than a luxury escape à deux. Whether marooned on a desert island (complete with luxurious creature comforts, naturally), setting sail into the…

Where We've Been In 2017

It's that time of the year again. The Michael Bublé CD is back in hibernation, we've sampled every Turkey leftover dish ever invented and - for some unknown reason - we are all feeling a little more rotund. As we get ready to enter 2018, we've been reflecting on the past year, which has been…

Dive With The Big Fish

With so much environmental doom and gloom in the news these days, the recent unveiling of North America's largest ocean reserve, the Revillagigedo archipelago, has been something of a ray of light. Spanning a staggering 57,176 square miles and made up of four volcanic islands, the protection…

Dive into 2018

Today was particularly hard. It all started when the alarm went off while it was still dark outside and got progressively worse as we gingerly stuck one toe out from under the duvet and it felt like we'd been transported overnight to Antarctica. Then there was the seemingly endless cycle of…

Blue Planet 2 inspired holidays

Coral Reefs

We were particularly excited for this week's episode of Blue Planet 2, which took us underwater to explore the most diverse marine ecosystems: coral reefs. Despite covering less than one percent of the Earth's surface, these submarine cities support a staggering 25 percent of all marine…

Bobtail squid Blue Planet 2

The Deep

Oh Attenborough, you never cease to amaze us. Last week's Blue Planet was a valuable lesson in marine life intelligence (read: they're smart), this week you've gone all intergalactic… but underwater. Apparently we know more about Mars than the depths of our own seas and, to labour our lack…

marine life diving vacations

One Ocean

A man stands in solitude at the front of a ship, peering over the horizon pensively. Jack? Waiting for Rose? Thankfully this isn't Titanic and the only 'I'm flying' scene was from the marine life (bird-eating fish, anyone?). Sir David Attenborough and his dulcet tones have returned to take…

Adventure holiday in the Yucatan

Diving The Cenotes Of Mexico

Diving in Mexico's cenotes is rather different from your average dive. Formed when soft limestone collapses, cenotes are essentially sinkholes connected by a labyrinth of secret underground caverns. Why is diving them so special? Aside from the pure thrill of cave diving, the water is so…

Don't Miss The Boat...

We love to plan. In fact, we have a rather large, rather worn map hung with pride in our office. We like to cover it in post-it notes scribbled with recommendations, draw frantic highlighter lines across its vast oceans and riddle its landmarks with pins as we argue over the best places to…

Halloween Dive Sites

It's nearly that time of year again, the last hurdle for commercialised companies before we're bombarded with miles of tinsel, advent calendars and Mariah Carey on repeat. As shops burst at the seams with Halloween tack, this year we invite you to forget trick or treaters, terrible costumes…

Combination holiday city break and diving Europe

Cool Combos

Like jeans and a white t-shirt, gin and tonic, toast and marmite (discuss), some things are just better together. Never is this more true than with travelling; some combinations just work, from mixing critters with culture, history with hammerheads or safari with scuba. Because let's face…

Bucket list diving with marine life in Bali

Blue Planet II

Who has seen the latest teaser of Blue Planet II? We certainly did, and its given us goosebumps. 20 years after the original series, our favourite naturalist David Attenborough is back and better then ever, taking us deeper than ever before and featuring even more aquatic animals in their…

What We Learnt From Chasing Coral

Picture this: A kaleidoscope of colourful corals, from gargantuan brain corals to gently swaying fan corals. Schools of vibrant purple and yellow fairy basslets dance above whilst snakelike moray eels lurk in crevices. Rainbow coloured parrot fish peck away for algae below a giant goliath…
