Dive Wakaya Club

Fiji

Life (and the diving) is beautifully simple at the Wakaya Club. This immaculate private island retreat is just 40 minutes by turboprop from Fiji proper, and once there life could not be easier. Probably the best "dive resort" in the world!

THE WAKAYA CLUB IS INCLUDED IN OUR BOOK, DIVE IN STYLE

Almost all the dive sites are within five minutes boat ride of the resort, so it’s possible to have a leisurely breakfast followed by a couple of dives and be back in time for a suitably delicious lunch and an afternoon ‘at leisure’.

Not, we suspect that you’ll be spending too much time on land with diving this good. Somosomo aside, this is arguably the finest diving in all of Fiji thanks to the pristine condition of the reef at Wakaya, which in turn is thanks to it being pretty much off limits to all but guests at Wakaya and the occasional liveaboard.

So what to expect? Fiji is known as the soft coral capital of the world, but there is some spectacular hard coral as well. Huge hard corals of all descriptions including an extraordinarily large tomato coral - brain, plate, star, finger – they’re all here and waiting to impress, and all surrounded by thousands upon thousands of orange and blue anthias fish.

The charming local dive team know the reef extremely well so should be able to find everything from manta rays to hammerheads for you at wonderful dives like Homestead and Lions Den.

This intimate hotel consists of just ten rooms dotted around the lush tropical gardens covering just ten per cent of the island – the rest has been left very much as is, and is home to deer, goats and pigs who occasionally end up on the delicious menu.

The spacious rooms are a study in under-stated elegance, with separate bedroom and sitting room decorated in the traditional Fijian style of high ceilings, woven walls and wooden floors. The bathrooms have a bath and an external shower.

Activities include – of course – diving and snorkelling but there is also a nine-hole golf course, tennis, spa and croquet available.

Fiji: Wakaya Club

The private island of Wakaya, 40 minutes' flight from Fiji's main airport at Nadi, is some 2,200 acres – but less than one-10th has been terraformed into one man's dream, the balance left to nature, stuffed with wild deer, horses, goats and pigs, some of which you will meet again at the restaurant. Ten minutes in a 4x4 and the resort reveals itself, small and...
