Gozo
The island where Odysseus fell under the spell of sea-nymph Calypso has many attractions for today's visitor, and yet revels in relative anonymity as a tiny satellite island off the north-western corner of Malta.
Comprising just 25 square miles, Gozo at first seems a staunchly traditional island, steeped in religious and clan ties. Every summer weekend sees a village celebrating their patron saint’s festival with street parties and huge clan flags flying, in traditions unchanged since the middle ages.
Another attraction of Gozo is the surprisingly vibrant nightlife with several lively bars and a couple of fun nightclubs as well. Add to all this a superb summer climate and some excellent restaurants serving delicious fresh seafood, and you have an extremely alluring and good value holiday option.
Gozo is known for having some of the best diving in the Med. Clear and unusually calm waters mean that visibility is typically in excess of 40 metres and the wide variety of dive sites include reefs, wartime wrecks and dramatic underwater scenery such as the submerged caves of the ‘Blue Hole’. The majority of the diving is done from the shore where you can simply jump off a rock and be immediately submerged in the underwater world. That being said, boat diving can be arranged for some of the sites that lie further off the coast.
We work with an excellent local dive centre based in Xlendi Bay, a PADI 5-star facility that offers everything from fun diving to the full range of courses. It is one of the best diving set ups on Gozo with a private pool and high quality equipment that is regularly maintained. This would be an excellent place to learn to dive.
While it is possible to dive in Gozo all year round, from November through to March the weather can be unpredictable and the sea a little cold. From April to August you can expect almost guaranteed sunshine, heat and great diving conditions. June to August are the best months but also the most crowded while in September and October you can expect some rain.
