Dive Hawaii

USA

Located right in the heart of the Pacific Ocean two thousand miles from the US mainland, Hawaii is the most remote island group on earth. Composed of six main islands - Maui, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, and Hawaii (the largest) - it is so distant from any other land mass that a startling thirty per cent of its marine life can be found nowhere else on the planet. This makes for some truly special diving.

FOUR SEASONS LANA'I IS INCLUDED IN OUR BOOK, DIVE IN STYLE

Known for decades as the Pineapple Island, Lanai used to be home to sixteen thousand acres of the world's prickliest fruit; at one point it was its largest exporter. When the pineapple industry took a turn for the worse in the 1980s, Lanai took a turn for the better as the island reinvented itself as a world-class resort destination.

With 236 rooms, Four Seasons Resort Lana’i at Manele Bay is a boutique hotel in Hawaiian terms. Better still, it is relatively unknown and wonderfully discreet. As the only hotel on the coast of the private island of Lanai, with access to some of Hawaii's most spectacular diving, Manele Bay offers the very best of the islands.

Voted one of the top ten best dive destinations in the world by Scuba Diving and Skin Diver magazines, Lanai is second only to the Maui-based dives of Molokoni crater and Molokai. Some consider it even better: many Maui-based diving operators journey to Lanai in preference to their home sites. The island is an extinct volcano, making it a playground of swim-throughs and giant lava tubes or caves.

The dive centre on Lanai is run by Trilogy Excursions, located in Lahaina harbour and just a three-minute bus ride Manele Bay. A well-respected Maui-based operator, it handles virtually all watersports activities on the island, arranging not just diving, but also humpback whale tours and other water-based excursions.

The hotel’s style is an unusual blend of Eastern and Hawaiian; it’s eclectic but it works. Central to the resort are the high-ceilinged reception areas, which look out over terraces of thriving bougainvillea, the pool and the ocean beyond. A three-minute walk takes you to the quiet beach shared by the island’s residents, but Lamai’s population is so tiny that it feels almost private.

The rooms all enjoy wonderful views, whether over the gardens or the ocean. A major advantage of the ocean view rooms is that at the right time of year you can lie on your bed and watch spinner dolphins at play, and humpback whales tail-slapping – this is totally effortless nature-watching.

The food is international and of the highest quality. You can eat anywhere from the poolside to the bar, and if you want to venture further afield, a regular shuttle service takes you up to the Golf Club overlooking the sea, or even higher to the Lodge at Koele.

Dive the Florida Keys

Our choice for a visit to the Keys is Little Palm Island. It’s hardly surprising that the makers of PT 109, the classic movie about President Kennedy’s wartime experiences, chose Little Palm Island to fool cinemagoers into thinking it was shot in the South Pacific. This is five acres of film-set perfection. Over 100 miles from Miami, the island is a short boat ride from the Keys’ arterial road, but it seems a lifetime away.
