Lizard Island and its surrounding National Park is the only place to stay to experience the magnificent coral and dive sites on this stretch of the Great Barrier Reef.

A three-minute ride from the island's simple airstrip delivers you to the hotel's discreet single-storey lodge, a wide, wooden-floored expanse with deep wicker sofas and timber chairs that sets the tone of laid-back luxury. Radiating out like wings on either side of the lodge are the rooms which all feature bright, modern Australian décor. All open directly onto shady private terraces, some with daybeds while others provide hammocks. The Oceanview Villas are built on the gently sloping hillside and offer amazing sunset views, while the Beachdront Suites, each with their own white-sand track leading to the main beach, are fronted by a rolling green lawn, palms and the blue sea.

There are various wining and dining options at Lizard Island, all taking advantage of the beautiful island setting so that guests can enjoy first class cuisine with first class views. Opt for Salt Water Restaurant which is a relaxed spot serving fresh, locally sourced produce with 180 degree ocean views; a private beach picnic; pizza or tapas at the rustic Marlin Bar; or a seven course tasting menu in one of the private dining pavilions. For drinks, Driftwood Bar is the perfect sundowner spot.

Home to the famous Blue Lagoon with its giant clams and coral gardens Lizard Island is a hot spot for diving and snorkelling and has numerous world class dive sites such as the Cod Hole within easy reach. The Lizard Island dive centre is faultless, with no fewer than ten instructors and a full range of up-to-date dive gear. Full day excursions out to the Great Barrier Reef are offered every other day, and night dives are available on request. Here you will come across some of the best coral we have ever seen as well as having thrilling close encounters with a gargantuan Cod and Maori Wrasse.

Fishing enthusiasts can also head out for a day of exhilarating game fishing; there are numerous bush walking tracks; glass bottom boat or sailing trips can be arranged; and there are various non-motorised water sports on offer. For those wanting to simply unwind, indulge in a pampering treatment at the serene Essentia Day Spa.
