The Pocinho Bay hotel is one of the only high quality boutique hotels we came across in the Azores that can truly be considered stylish (though we only visited three of the islands so there may be more!). It is a very beautiful place.

Set just a few minutes drive from the main village of Madalena, the Pocinho Bay hotel feels quite isolated (in a good way) and is set next to the rugged coastline with a wonderful view of neighbouring Faial Island; and a small rock pool for swimming - there are no beaches on Pico.

This boutique B&B is run by a lovely couple who have invested a lot of time and energy in making a luxurious and comfortable retreat. The six rooms are all stylishly decorated with big, comfy beds, and chic furnishings. It is simple yet elegant and all housed in a traditional building of the architectural style of Pico.

Breakfasts are served in a semi-open room in summer and are something special with home-baked breads, fresh eggs and all manner of goodness; all served in a lovely setting with photos on all walls of places and people from the owners' travels. In winter it is served indoors and there is no lunch or dinner on offer.

Facilities are limited as this is a small property but there is a lovely fresh water swimming pool overlooking the sea and the house has 13 hectares of land with excellent walking so there is plenty to explore. There is also a stylish lounge where you can relax.

Why we love it
