Set in a 16th century fortress overlooking the bay at Horta on the island of Faial in the central Azores, the Pousada da Horta is a boutique hotel with a long history.

The setting and architecture alone are enough to convince you to visit this place. With stunning views of Pico and the volcano that dominates its skyline there aren't many better places to sip a post dive beer or cup of coffee. Add in a perfect view of the multitude of impressive yachts that come into port in Horta each year and you get the picture.

With 28 rooms including two suites, this is a small, intimate hotel. All rooms have air conditioning, cable TV, mini-bar, Wi-Fi and all the amenities you will need. It isn't overly luxurious but a very comfortable place to spend your nights and one of the best quality places in town.

It doesn't offer a huge range of facilities - a decent swimming pool (salt water), family games and a meeting room being about it. But it is well located just a stone's throw from the centre of town with the dive centre being a 1-minute walk as well. So you don't need much at the hotel!

There is just one restaurant serving buffet breakfasts as well as a la carte lunch and dinner. It is simple but nice and there is also a separate bar. It is worth venturing out to town to drink and eat as well.

Make sure you wander down to Peter's for a post-dive gin and tonic - they are some of the best you will find, anywhere!
