In the north of the country lies the historic capital of Ilha. Here, the Portuguese established their inaugural base, adorning it with remarkable structures that blend Portuguese, Swahili and Arab influences, infused with a hint of India. The result is a fabulous fusion of architectural styles. At the other end of country is Maputo, the current capital; a city that embraces the future. Then in the middle there's Gorongosa National Park, a garden of Eden landscape where lions, gazelles, hyenas and elephants roam freely. Unfortunately, Gorongosa and parts of the north are currently inaccessible due to an ongoing Islamist uprising.
When the opportune moment arises consider flying into Pemba. From there, you can uncover the islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago and immerse yourself in the daily lives of the Makuas, Makondés and Quimuanes ethnic groups. And don't miss a trip to Niassa, home to Mozambique's largest reserve, to observe wildlife such as elephants, giraffes and hippos hanging out around the vast lake.
For divers, a treasure chest of gems awaits along the unspoilt coastlines and beautiful islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago in the south. With pinch-me Indian Ocean views and several marine parks to show off the healthy coral gardens, large fish and immaculate dive sites, it's no wonder that Neptunes Arm is considered one of the world's best dive sites.
