Diving - Grenada

Grenada: 10 years old

Hitting double digits calls for something memorable, and a dive in Grenada fits the bill perfectly. Warm, crystal-clear waters and sites just a short swim or boat ride from shore make it a confidence-building introduction for young explorers, whether it's a first try dive or a Junior Open Water course.

Thanks to its protected marine areas, the reefs here are teeming with life. Take the plunge at Purple Rain, where clouds of bright anthias dance above the coral, while parrotfish graze across the reef and angelfish drift past. Hawksbill turtles are often spotted cruising by, occasionally swinging in for a closer look - and at this point, it's safe to say this is officially the coolest birthday ever.

The adventure doesn't end there. Dive at the Underwater Sculpture Park or explore Bianca C, often dubbed Grenada's own Titanic. As the shipwreck capital of the eastern Caribbean, it's home to various sunken relics now transformed into thriving marine habitats. Then round off the day with a big slice of birthday cake - a well-earned treat after all that underwater explorin'.

Scuba diving

Azores, Portugal: 18 years old

We might be a little biased, but we can't think of a better way to mark 18 than heading off on a dive trip to The Azores in Portugal. It's a great excuse for one last big family adventure.

Does your b'day fall between April and October? You're in luck - this is whale migration season in the Azores, prime time for diving with sperm and fin whales. Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins are also seen darting through the shallows, while schools of jackfish and tuna sweep through the blue. It's also a great place to spot sunfish and marvel at their weird but wonderful shape.

Then come the headline encounters: blue sharks cruising past at Princess Alice Bank and thresher sharks making an appearance off Santa Maria. It's wild, it's exhilarating, it's just what you need for your 18th.

Raja Ampat, Indonesia diving

Raja Ampat, Indonesia: 30 years old

The best way to shake off the holiday blues is by booking a trip - and where better than Raja Ampat in Indonesia? Located in the heart of the Coral Triangle, a staggering 70% of the world's coral species can be found here, and every dive feels packed with activity, from swirling schools of fusiliers to reef sharks on patrol.

Slow things down and look closer: macro life fills every crevice, from perfectly camouflaged critters to tiny reef dwellers bursting with colour. Here, there's always something catching your eye, and no two dives feel the same - who said your 30s had to be boring?

Whale shark

The Maldives: 50 years old

Fancy seeing some sharks on your birthday? The Maldives is just the ticket, a mix of heart-racing action below the surface and pure bliss when you come ashore, exactly what you need when you reach the big 5-0.

Here, bucket-list encounters come as standard. Come face to face with hammerhead sharks in the early morning blue, spot whale sharks gliding through the shallows and marvel at tiger sharks patrolling the deeper channels. Across iconic atolls like North Male, Ari and Baa, reef sharks weave through coral pinnacles while eagle rays and turtles drift between vibrant reefs. And if you're feeling your age after a day of underwater thrills, just remember David Attenborough is still exploring at 100, so there's plenty more adventure to come…

After all that adrenaline, hang up your flippers and switch off in style. Think fresh Maldivian cuisine, a rejuvenating massage and unhurried time to relax.

Manta ray

Philippines & Palau: 65 years old

The Philippines and Palau are a perfect pairing for 65 - when you've likely got the time to do a trip properly, without rushing from one dive to the next. In the Philippines, expect an intricate patchwork of reefs and a kaleidoscope of colour, with standout macro life stealing the show, from pygmy seahorses and ghost pipefish to tiny, wonderfully weird critters hidden in the coral.

A short hop away, Palau packs a punch - all dramatic currents, towering reef walls and deep blue drop-offs. At Blue Corner, admire swirling barracuda, blacktip sharks and passing manta rays, while the Blue Holes reveal beautiful shafts of light, with humphead wrasse cruising along the reef edge. If this is what 65 looks like, you're doing it right.
