Mexico
Manta Rays and Mexican Markets
Marine-rich waters, crystal-clear visibility and heart-racing dives: Mexico's underwater world is in a league of its own. Set your sights on the Sea of Cortez, off the eastern coast of Baja California, where manta rays glide gracefully overhead, whale sharks patrol the depths and shimmering schools of pelagic fish shift and swirl in every direction.
Dive, kick off the fins and compare sightings - it's a routine every diver knows and loves. Then comes the inevitable question: 'What's for lunch?' Luckily, Baja California has your post-dive cravings well and truly covered. Make a beeline for one of its historic towns and follow the irresistible aromas to a street food market, where you can feast on fiery tacos and freshly grilled seafood, all elevated with some zingy salsa.
Suitably fuelled up, amble around Loreto, one of Mexico's Pueblos Magicos (Magic Towns), where the twang of guitar drifts through sun-drenched squares and colonial-era streets. Come sunset, make your way to the beach for a traditional clambake, where the day's catch is cooked low and slow over glowing coals.
Fiji
Coral Reefs and Kava Ceremonies
If you're dreaming of a dive trip with a serious dose of culture, Fiji fits the bill perfectly. In Beqa Lagoon, located off the southern coast of Viti Levu, a 500-year-old firewalking tradition is still blazing on (pun intended). Practised by the Sawau tribe, this sacred ceremony sees barefoot firewalkers cross red-hot stones, which symbolise strength and is believed to bestow good fortune. This ritual is reserved for the Sawau tribe only, and besides, you want to keep those feet in top form for your fin kicks.
All that oohing and aahing is bound to work up a thirst. Join a traditional kava ceremony and sip Fiji's earthy national drink, celebrating community and spiritual connection. It's usually enjoyed to mark a special occasion, and with the diving that's to follow, we'd say you have one.
With the bowl polished off, take the plunge into Beqa Lagoon. Crowned the 'Soft Coral Capital of the World', it dazzles with kaleidoscopic reefs and its famous bull shark sightings, guaranteed to set the adrenaline flowing.
Indonesia
The Coral Triangle and Sacred Traditions
Name a marine creature on your diving wish list. Whale shark? Manta ray? Pygmy seahorse? Whatever springs to mind, chances are you'll find it somewhere in Indonesia's Coral Triangle. At its heart lies Raja Ampat (aka, paradise), where rainbow-hued coral gardens and the richest marine biodiversity on the planet make every dive feel like striking the underwater jackpot.
No holiday to Indonesia is complete without a little island-hopping. And with more than 6,000 inhabited islets scattered across the archipelago, every ferry, speedboat or flight promises a new adventure. For example, a trio-trip across Java, Bali and Flores reveals three major religions and a tapestry of languages and cultures.
In Java, explore Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple, where incense curls through the air as worshippers adorn its ancient stonework with fruit and flower offerings. And on Sumba (south of Flores), the indigenous Marapu culture still thrives, believing the natural world is infused with ancestral spirits.
Then there's all-the-rave Bali. Head to Uluwatu, where world-class waves and a wonderfully laid-back island culture make it the perfect place to give surfing a whirl.
Malta

Who says you have to pack just one passion into a holiday? In Malta, history buffs, art aficionados and diving fanatics all leave happy.
Start where any diver would: beneath the surface. Around Malta and neighbouring Gozo, an extraordinary collection of Second World War wrecks have been reclaimed by the sea, their rusting hulls now draped in coral and surrounded by swirling shoals of fish, moray eels and eagle rays.
New to diving? Malta makes for a pretty spectacular classroom, where the currents are calm, the waters are crystal clear and the reef residents are abundant.
Back on dry land, tick off UNESCO-listed Valletta before weaving through the mosaic-embellished streets of the walled city of Mdina. Finish the day the Maltese way: sinking your teeth into some local cuisine and indulging in a scoop (or two) of gelato. All in the name of cultural research, of course...
Australia
Liveaboard living and rainforest discoveries
Australia has many claims to fame: the world's largest coral reef, the oldest continuous living culture and some seriously cute koalas.
Chart a course for Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, and set sail on a liveaboard to explore this underwater mecca in all its glory.
